Rock and Roll Liberty, with Trevor Burrus

By

On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at 2PM EST, the team at Students For Liberty invites you to join us for our latest Liberty at Home online event. This will be the fifth and final episode of our Instagram Live mini-series on Libertarian Pop Culture.

Titled ‘Rock and Roll Liberty’, this event will feature Trevor Burrus, who will be interviewed by Russell Coates, our Content Marketing Specialist.

Many who are familiar with Students For Liberty will likely remember Trevor Burrus from his previous appearances at our events.

A research fellow in the Cato Institute’s Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies and in the Center for the Study of Science, Trevor Burrus also serves as editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review.

With a particular interest in fields such as constitutional law, legal and political philosophy, legal history, and the links between science and public policy, his work has featured in a number of academic journals. These include, among others, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, the New York University Journal of Law and Liberty, and the Syracuse Law Review.

Along with Aaron Ross Powell, Trevor Burrus co-hosts a podcast, ‘Free Thoughts’, on Libertarianism.org. This weekly podcast covers a variety of topics relating to libertarian theory, philosophy, and history. He has also published many articles in major media outlets, including in the Washington Post, the New York Times, Forbes, and the Huffington Post.

Wednesday’s event will focus on the rise of rock and roll music, looking particularly at the role played by social and economic freedom in the genre’s development, starting in the mid-twentieth century. It is important to consider the influence of other genres such as rhythm and blues, country, and jazz on the advent of rock and roll, along with significant cultural shifts. However, it is clear that much of this was only made possible by the dramatic increase in living standards, purchasing power, and individual liberty that marked the era.

To hear Trevor Burrus share his perspective on the role of social and economic liberty in the rise of rock and roll, as well as the general crossover between liberty and pop culture, make sure to tune in for his interview.
