Alejandro Rengel joined Students For Liberty in Ecuador in 2013, after being invited by his friend Julio Clavijo. Subsequently, together with Julio and a small team, Alejandro worked to raise the profile of SFL’s network in Ecuador, starting from scratch but eventually creating a large structure of over 30 leaders throughout Ecuador.
Alejandro carried out this work while he studied political science at the Universidad Casa Grande. He also was a member of the Latin America Executive Board, before completing his career with Students For Liberty in 2015.
During his time with Students For Liberty, Alejandro Rengel was able to develop his knowledge of the ideas of liberty, as well as many key academic concepts that would form the basis of his political principles in working to improve democracy in Ecuador.
For Alejandro, the experience of working together with others was of particular relevance. The ability to assemble teams became extremely important later on, as was his experience with organizing events and networking.
Developing a range of professional skills are key elements of the Students For Liberty experience. Furthermore, Alejandro believes that the attitude developed by working for a purpose becomes a great tool that applies to many areas of life, when you understand that you can work towards a greater goal if you put your mind to it.
Alejandro’s message to anyone considering joining the Local Coordinator Program:
“I would greatly recommend becoming a member of Students For Liberty and always keep an open mind. The ideas of liberty will open many doors, but remembering that failing to keep an open mind can close others if you forget to listen to those who think differently. This is especially relevant at the age when most of us become Local Coordinators, when we discover the most about the world and form our own opinions.“
After leaving Students For Liberty, Alejandro worked at Ecuador Libre, a local NGO that promotes the ideas of liberty in Ecuador. At Ecuador Libre, Alejandro participated in the development of plans for a then-candidate to the presidency (now president elect).
Alejandro subsequently worked at the National Assembly for a brief period before becoming a Local Program Officer for the Ecuador office of the International Republican Institute.
As an activist with Students For Liberty, Alejandro found himself dedicated to the ideas of liberty and promoting transparency and the rule of law to advance democracy. As he puts it, a government that operates based on the rule of law will make for a freer country.
