Rock Bands and Liberty, with Matt Kibbe

By

On Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at 2PM EST, the team at Students For Liberty invites you to join us for the latest event of our Liberty at Home series. This will be the second event of a mini-series on Instagram Live, exploring the theme of liberty and pop culture.

Titled ‘Rock Bands and Liberty’, this event will feature Matt Kibbe, President and Chief Community Organizer at Free the People. He will be interviewed by Russell Coates, our Content Marketing Specialist.

This event will look at some of the ways in which pro-liberty ideas have influenced certain rock bands, and how the message of liberty can be promoted through their work. The discussion will include an assessment of the cultural impact of bands such as the Grateful Dead and Rush. Matt Kibbe will emphasize the significance of cultural movements centered on bands in the bid to popularize elements of pro-liberty thinking.

In 2016, Matt Kibbe co-founded Free the People with his wife Terry. The organization is dedicated to promoting the values of liberty through video production and creative storytelling. These objectives are shared by Fight the Power Productions, where Kibbe is a Co-Founder and Partner.

An experienced advocate for individual liberty and fiscal responsibility, Kibbe served as the president of FreedomWorks for 11 years prior to co-founding Free the People. In his endeavors to promote the ideas of liberty, he has also published Don’t Hurt People and Don’t Take Their Stuff: A Libertarian Manifesto, a #2 New York Times bestseller.

The upcoming Instagram Live interview will see Matt Kibbe, a long-time fan of the Grateful Dead, discuss the self-organizing principles embodied by the band’s followers at their many gatherings. He will also highlight the message of individualism presented by Rush, whose lyricist, the late Neil Peart, was influenced by the work of Ayn Rand.

To hear Matt’s perspective on rock bands and liberty, and learn more about the crossover between liberty and pop culture, make sure to tune in for his interview.
