Punks and Posers: What Punk, Bitcoin, and Liberty all Have in Common

By

On Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 2PM EST, the team at Students For Liberty invites you to join us for the latest event of our Liberty at Home series. This will be the first of a mini-series of Instagram Live interviews on the theme of pop culture.

Titled ‘Punks and Posers: What Punk, Bitcoin, and Liberty all Have in Common’, this event will feature Zach Harvey, CEO and co-founder of Lamassu Industries AG, a company specializing in Bitcoin ATMs.

He will be interviewed by Russell Coates, our Content Marketing Specialist, where he will discuss the topics of cryptocurrency, punk music, and liberty. In particular, he will explore the parallels that can be drawn between the current cypherpunk movement and hardcore punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Zach Harvey has significant experience in the worlds of both cryptocurrencies and punk music. The lead singer of Weird Chicken, a Jerusalem-based punk band, Zach is particularly interested in the underlying philosophy and ethos of the punk movement.

Alongside his punk music, Zach has a passion for cryptocurrencies and the opportunities they provide to further the cause of liberty. As such, in 2011, the guitar shop in Tel Aviv which he owned with his brother Josh became the first store in Israel to accept Bitcoin as a means of payment.

In 2013, Lamassu, the company which Zach co-founded, manufactured the world’s first Bitcoin ATM prototype. Used as a demonstrative tool for the 2013 International Students for Liberty conference in Washington, D.C., the Bitcoin ATM prototype became an immediate success.

With a mission of bringing cryptocurrencies to the masses, Lamassu soon began manufacturing in a facility in northern Portugal. Since then, the company has grown and enjoyed considerable success.

In the upcoming Instagram Live interview, Zach will discuss the cryptoanarchist cypherpunk movement which is currently booming, and explain the similarities it shares with the hardcore punk scene of 40 years ago. He wishes to emphasize that these links are far from coincidental.

To hear Zach Harvey’s story and learn more about the cypherpunk movement, make sure to tune in for his interview.
